Pantone Color for 2012

Yep, Pantone selected Tanerine Tango for as the 'it' color of 2012. I really like orange (a la Hermes), but I can't say that I own a single item that qualifies as "Tanerine Tango".

In my opinion it is the kind of color that looks amazing on the right person...

Instagram + me = love

I am completely obsessed with Instagram lately. My relationship with Instagram started off slow, but the initial infatuation has blossomed into full on love.

I am serious, it has gotten so bad that my Nikon is gathering dust.

I like the challenge of taking pictures with only my cellphone and attempting to make them compelling. It forces you to wait for that decisive moment when the light is right & all the shots just happen on the fly.

But that is not why I am obsessed with instagram....

Here is the truth: I love getting a glimpse into everyone else's world. I love seeing the world through someone else's eyes. It personal and I find it fascinating what people choose to share.

Conclusion: Life is beautiful. Instagram helps you see more of it.

If any of you guys haven't tried it out, give it a shot. It's a free app that you can get on your iphone. You take pictures, crop, apply filters and share. And then you know you spread love and joy and such.

My parent's celebrated 50 years of marriage on December 30, 2011.

For their golden anniversary I asked them a series of questions & while the transcript in it's entirety will not be published here - I thought it would be a nice to share their advice for those of us just starting out.

What advice would you give to newlyweds today?

Dad's advice: Don’t rush into important things that involve marriage and family.

Mom's advice: What a hard question! I think everyone has to sort it out themselves...it is not easy to live with another human being. You have to give and take equally, be nice to each other, and never both give up at the same time.

What would your advice be?

This future newlywed would love to hear your secrets to a happy marriage!

Magical Weekend :: Cannon Beach, Or.

Just returned home from our annual pilgrimage to Cannon Beach; a tradition that we have carried out these last seven years with our very best friends.

On Friday, we had a bonfire on the beach. The sky was a blanket of familiar stars, blinking away with ancient fables and stories to be told.

The half moon rose slowly in the east. We were all remarking how this night had no equal when a large meteor entered the atmosphere. It lit up the night sky, giving us a moment to turn and watch it strike across the sky into the ocean. I have never seen anything quite like it in all my life.

Jared always had a sense of humor. Perfect timing buddy.

Saturday we woke up to unseasonably warm weather. The beach radiated a soft sliver glow, basking us in sunshine. A thin fog hugging the coast, ocean raging with lacy white foam floating up the shoreline. The sun shimmering off the wet sand and water - appearing to come from every direction.

The rest of the weekend was spent playing board games and laughing with old friends. A weekend I will never forget. So lucky to spend it with loved ones.

It's the Holiday Season

Hard to believe it is Christmas time again, but I have to say that I am glad for it. It came right when we needed it the most.

I am finishing up my finals this week, so I may not be able to visit this week, but I have been thinking about all of you.

Looking forward to a break from school. I plan on celebrating by doing some serious ~~drinking~~ relaxing.

Feet on the ground :: Breath in the lungs

The fog that has surrounded me these last few weeks has ebbed, leaving me with sincere gratitude for the ground at my feet and the breath in my lungs.

My only hope is that I emerge from this nightmare a better person, one who will live with the courage and compassion that my dear friend had in spades.

We lost our dear friend Jared ~~to a tragic accident~~ this weekend.

Jared was a prince of a guy; he was the most sincere, thoughtful person I have ever met. He was witty, smart and genuine. He was always the voice of reason and I was honored to be his friend.

Worse than a test dream?

Well it finally happened: I had my first wedding anxiety dream!

My dilemma: It is the day of the wedding and the dress had some funky detailing on the bodice. I tried to fix it with decoupage and I somehow made it look worse.

I know hard to image with *decoupage* as my brilliant solution!

Funny thing is, when I started to wake-up from my dream, I remember thinking "I can't go now; I haven't even seen Rob yet."

I'll take it as a good sign that I still wanted to walk down the aisle - even as a decoupage disaster.

Has anyone else had a wedding anxiety dream?

Please tell me I am not alone!

Our Balcony :: Fall 2011

The view from our living room.

The first time I stepped onto our balcony it felt right. Rob and I have lived here for over six years and I still have to pinch myself! I live a blessed life. There is no way around it; the proof is in the pudding.

Living in downtown Portland in a 'historic building' is a dream come true. We bought our condo back when the housing craze was at it's height. It may not have been the best time to buy, but I wouldn't change our decision for all the tea in China.

These walls are filled with happy memories: Rob asked for my hand in marriage here, we built a home here. I am eternally grateful.

Plus doing yoga to a live Cathedral Choir is really something!

Easy & Chic :: Table Arrangement

My favorite flower arrangements are tall branches - I love how dramatic & elegant they are. These maple leaves that are tall enough to ride a roller coaster (4 + feet, you feel me?).

They are also a stress free and inexpensive way to transform any party. I plan on doing something similar (green foliage) for our June wedding.

It's mid-terms this week, so I am back to the books.

The Kindness of Strangers :: Deep Thoughts

It is officially fall in Portland. The trees are turning rich colors of red, yellow & orange. The morning air is refreshingly cool & crisp. I love the fall. It is the best time of year at our flower market, where the local farms are harvesting amazing product: rose hips, berries of all kinds, corn stocks, you name it they have it. This is such a magical time of year, I have to remind me myself to slow down and take note.

Fortunately for me I had a funny reminder this week that I need to slow down a bit. Walking back from the grocery store loaded down with three heavy bags of food, I fell down. I could have slipped on a banana the way I went down.

I was walking down Burnside, which if you are familiar with Portland, is one of the busiest streets we have. After I went down, I had to have a little laugh. Nothing bruised but a little pride.

Next thing I know, a man gets out of his car to help me up and see if I was okay. He was just waiting for the light to change and saw the whole thing (along with like 30 other people). I was flabbergasted and said my thanks. He quickly got back into his car before the light turned green.

Nice people make the world go round. I felt like hugging the world after that.

The tortoise & the hare design is meant to be tongue & cheek. Rob & I have been together for eight years; slow & steady wins the race, right?

I hope that our family & friends will find humor in the design. I selected the tortoise & the hare not only because it is humorous, but because they are auspicious symbols in Chinese culture. The tortoise is a symbol of wisdom, longevity & wealth. While the hare represents hope for the future. All blessings that Rob & I hope to enjoy in our married life.

Last week life kicked into fifth gear: Fall term started, I got a cold, Rob and I watched over my niece and nephew for three nights, we attended a wedding out of town and worked a wee bit too. I was exhausted. Then Saturday opened it's warm arms to me and I barely left the bed. Fortunately for me it was another day in paradise (a.k.a. rain) and I didn't feel the least bit guilty about staying cozy in doors all day. I feel refreshed and ready to reengage in school, work, life, faith. Game on.

The rain has finally rolled into Portland & I couldn't be happier. I love nothing better than a quiet, tea drinking, book reading Sunday. I know tons of Portlandians that say they hate the rain.

I always find that funny.

Didn't you know what you were signing up for when you moved here? Don't get me wrong I can totally relate in April - when the grey cloudy days start to wear on even this rain lover. But after all the sticky 90+ weather we have been having lately, I rejoiced when the rain came.

I take think walks (deep I know). I struggle to keep myself grounded at times & this is my solution: leave my cellphone behind & get out of the house. We are fortunate to live in downtown Portland & there is always something to entertain.

The best walks happen when I wear my huge dark sunglasses & nobody can tell where I am looking. Rob once told me this was a time tested boy trick to check out girls. I absolutely love it, you get a glimpse of the person with their guard down (& the glasses keep you from emitting a creepy vibe).

I always end up wondering about the people on the street & their lives. What makes them tick? What do they want in life? I think we all want the same thing: to feel connected. To feel like our flaws & insecurities are not exclusive to us. That we are a part of something bigger than ourselves.

Just got back into town after a relaxing Labor Day weekend in Cannon Beach.

All is peaceful here on the home front, Rob & Biscuit are napping. The house is quiet. To me, Labor Day weekend is all about saying goodbye to summer & eating BBQ. We were able to do just that & much more. I am as happy as a mouse.

I made this rosemary & sage crown just for fun. The smells were intoxicating & the simple process put me in a good mood. It made me think about our Wedding later this year & I decided that all our nieces should be included in the ceremony. I imagine them wearing these simple crowns & white dresses. Which is certainly not ground breaking, but it made me smile to think of them running around in these floppy fragrant crowns all the same.

The new moon came just in time I think. I have been running around like a crazy person these last few weeks, tying off loose ends & probably driving Roberto crazy. Family Crest :: Thistle

This is the family crest I designed for our wedding. I drew a dozen different designs (at least five with a thistle theme alone) & of course after all that I love what I designed in Photoshop the best.

Rob & I have been brainstorming a family motto as well, because what is a family crest without a little motto etched in Latin? The front runners are both snippets from our favorite authors/poets:

"we beat on" - F. Scott Fitzgerald (from the last line of the Great Gatsby) & "It's today" - Pablo Neruda ( XLIX, cien sonetos de amor).

We are taking our time & really mulling it over - since deciding on a family motto is serious business!

Living in-between Interstate 405 & a deserted parking lot are the best wild weeds in all of Portland. They are really living on the edge, where not many walk by & even fewer will notice their innate beauty.

I know their charm may be lost on some, but I just love thistle. I love how hearty they are; this plant may not have seen rain in weeks - sweltering out in the sun, but it blooms & grows all the same. It is strong, beautiful & unique.

I would poach them (because I am so street), but that would be wrong. These beauties belong here in the asphalt jungle - without them the side walk would just be to bleak to bare.

Camp RYLA :: 2011

These darling young adults are the Chipmunks, my group at camp RYLA 2011.

This past week I have been in the Oregon 'wilderness' as a counselor for Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy). We learn about leadership styles, we do trust falls, set S.M.A.R.T. goals, talk about our feelings, sing kumbaya (okay, that last part is a lie, but you get the idea). I was 'unplugged' for the entire week - no cell phone, no news, no nada & although I missed all of you - I have to say it was refreshing.

When I first started working with RYLA I was a bright eyed bushy tailed College graduate. Now, I come back year after year (right when my heart feels like a little raisin pumping in my chest). These young adults remind me how petty my everyday issues really are & for that I am eternally grateful.

My Dad is a rock. Whenever you need him - he is there. We call him The Wolf (after the gentleman in Pulp Fiction who solves the sticky problems). How to make a living succulent wreath

Who doesn't love succulents? They are low maintenance beauties that come in an astonishing array of colors. Succulents can be potted in soil, but they also take root in peat moss. Succulents make the perfect summer time wreath & they are easy to make.

The materials needed to make a simple succulent wreath:

- peat moss

- floral wire

- wire wreath frame (or supple twigs)

- succulents

- scissors

First, soak your peat moss in water. Then fill a wire frame with the damp peat moss & use floral wire to adhere to frame. Once the frame is complete, use scissors (or sharp object) to create small holes for the succulents stems. It is best to prep your succulents a day ahead, removing lower petals to add to the stems length (the stem with callus over a bit, which is fine). Wrap floral wire around base of each succulent, place stem in the hole created & wrap wire around the peat moss frame to hold the plant in place (you may also you floral staples to keep the succulents in place until the plant takes root). Place each succulent one at a time & voila you have a beautiful succulent wreath to enjoy. Don't forget to water your beauties (I soak mine in water at least once a week).

I am restless: I want to do a hundred million things all at once, but the best I can do at present is make sure we have clean laundry in the house. It's finals week & I am happy that the term is coming to a close, but my battery is running on low.

I have been reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to my nephew Thomas lately & I don't know if it the constant rereads, but I am starting to relate to the story: Elizabeth ate through 13 credits but she was still hungry. . .

I wish that I was at the tummy ache part of the story - you know - right before he makes his cocoon (I could use the rest & wouldn't mind coming out the other side a butterfly). Alas, I am at the beginning of my tale - this caterpillar is hungry & impatient.

I could finish my degree in Winter of 2012, true enough, but I do not think that the required amount of credits is sufficient to get me where I want to go. I ought to be a better artist, know more about HTML, be able to draw something that resembles the notions in my head, create elegantly scrolling calligraphy & be able to draw out intricate decals as vector art. I am explaining this to my adviser - telling her why I need these 'extra' credits on my roster & she is incredulous. In the end I tell her: I need these credits because I am not just after a degree (I have made that folly before). I want to bring these lofty notions in my head down to earth.

Believe it or not but these Movie Stars are my grandparents: Elizabeth "Betty" Denhart & "Tom" R.F. Denhart. I was named after Grandma & I can't help taking it is a compliment; I was named after a wickedly smart & funny woman. She is effortlessly beautiful & has always been exceptionally kind to others. She has read more books than anyone I know (she was a librarian for a long time) & always remembers the title of that book you forget. From her impeccable sense of style (exhibit a: that swim suit is so en vongue) to her amazing cooking. Grandma is what we refer to as a BLT: she has the brains, the looks, the talent.

Happy Birthday Grandma, I love you.

I really love the crab apple/kale number featured above - It just makes me want to do some flamenco dancing! About a year back I was dreaming up an all hydrangea number (similar to the one listed below), but I just didn't have the funds to make it happen. I was so excited to find Nicole's work, I almost dropped dead on the spot.

Mother's Day 2011

floral fascinator for easter

Here is the floral facinator hat I made for Easter Mass (since I am not invited to the royal wedding - I figured Easter was my only chance to pull this off). Made with dusty miller, lisianthus, ranunculus flowers & a whole lot of floral wire.

The hidden structure of the hat is a mesh oval attached to a headband. Using floral wire I weaved a grid onto the mesh material. The flowers were individually wired into the grid I created. I had such fun wearing this piece - you can't help but feel festive (& yes a bit like Carmen Miranda).

This past week has been full of joy & sadness. News of life, love & cancer. I have been siting here trying to write something meaningful. I want to make sense of everything that has happened in a week & I am at a loss.

Maybe it is not my place to understand. What I do know is how grateful I am for all the blessings in my life. I am so thankful that I was able to cry for joy this week & not just from grief. I am grateful for the love my dear friend has found, for news of a baby in the family & how strong/ beautiful / inspiring my big sister is.

Saturday was a good day: I woke up early, went to Whole Foods & threw caution to the wind, purchasing far more than I should have. I made Beef Burgundy Stew for dinner (like a real adult) & arranged the dinner table with spring on my lips. I got some serious work done in the morning & was able to unwind at night. It was wonderful to relax & enjoy some good company, food & wine. Spring is near, I feel it.

Woke up to a little winter wonderland this morning. Rob's school is closed & I think he is more excited than any of his students. Happy Chinese New Year (lunar new year)!

The Year of the Rabbit is a time to rest, according to Chinese Astrologists. We just finished an action pack year (Tiger :: 2010), this new year is about rest, relaxation & getting things in order. A Rabbit year is a time to prepare for next year, 2012: the year of the Dragon (a very auspicious year full of new opportunities & ventures). A Rabbit year is more about laying low & preparing for the future.

In regards to Feng Shui, this is a metal hare year. The metal aesthetic is clean & minimalistic. This is a year to get rid of the clutter & live more efficiently. This is a year of rest, yes, but also a time to organize your life. Donating your things (or selling your unused stuff) is very rewarding & this is a good year to do just that. I am a big fan of a ritual cleaning of the home; it feels good to unload your burdens.

I am firm believer that we relate emotionally to our possessions. This is not necessary a bad thing: we create spaces that make us feel comfortable & happy. The flip side is a place where you feel negatively about your stuff (& by association yourself). An example? How about a crammed garage &/or basement (filled with things that have not been used or needed for years).

If this sounds familiar, this does not mean something is wrong with you. You should, however think about why. Why are you holding on to these things? Did you have plans for these things? Do you still? How do you feel when you think about the item, the space? Perhaps you have good reasons for holding on to certain things, but if you have been meaning to do this for years, please visit my earlier post here.

Chocolate pudding topped with ground chocolate graham cracker (shaved chocolate works well too). Add a sprig of your favorite herb for fun. Mint or Rosemary are great options. I used chive for this baby shower.

While in the throws of planning my own Wedding, I have a tendency to fall in love with every season & design combination possible. The start of Winter has proven to be no different. The simplicity & elegant beauty of Lani & Matt's Wedding in Beaver Creek, Colorado is another mark in Winter's favor.

From the winter green Bridesmaid's bouquets to the cotton center pieces, every aspect is perfect. The Floral Design was executed by the talented Mindy Rice with Event Design by Lisa Vorce of Oh, How Charming; bringing the term 'dream team' to a whole new level.

This darling 3 Z Zebra* card is from The Graphics Fairy and (as the name implies) she is a Fairy Blogger who brings you charming vintage images for free. If you are looking for a unique Christmas card or tag, this is a great resource.

Be warned however, her site is highly addicting (I find myself roaming her site memorized). I had a hard time picking out my Holiday card because there are so many good options!

They have a lot going for them:

1) They are delicious

We decided to 'upgrade' our standard Popovers, after my Mom saw an article about a BLT Steak Restaurant that serves Popovers with Gruyere cheese baked on top. Now what about that doesn't sound fabulous?

We tried it & are never looking back!

Ingredients:

4 cups of warm milk
8 eggs
4 cups flour
1- 1/2 Tbs salt
2 1/2 cups grated Gruyere cheese

Instructions:

preheat oven to 350 degrees

Whisk eggs (we used a Kitchen Aid mixer on low during this entire process). Warm milk in a saucepan & slowly add to the egg mixture. Measure the flour & sift into the mixture. Add salt. The batter can be refrigerated over night.

Spray non-stick vegetable spray (like Pam) in the baking pan to prevent sticking. Pour batter into cups, filling until about 3/4 full. Add grated Gruyere cheese on top of mixture (about 2 1/2 Tbs each).

Bake in oven for about 15 minutes. Rotate pan a half a turn & continue to bake until golden brown (about 40 minutes).

Makes 12

Bring to dinner party, impress family/friends, etc.

Large quarter placards that I used to make CD cases. The quarters size are the perfect fit for a CD - just glue the rim & wa la - you are done.

I found these in the Teacher section at the Dollar Tree Store (so a whole pack including multiple pennies, dimes, nickles only cost a dollar).

Once again I grabbed as many as I could get my hands on.

Long table with butcher paper runner/table cover.
Copper gutter down the middle with fruit & flowers spilling out of the container on both sides.

Now I take this vision & walk out of the flower market with something completely different!
